What was expected to be a festive and competitive atmosphere at the FIFA Club World Cup took an ugly turn this weekend as tensions erupted between Chelsea supporters and fans of a rival club outside the stadium ahead of a highly anticipated match.
According to eyewitnesses and footage circulating on social media, the altercation broke out near the entrance of Lusail Stadium just hours before Chelsea’s semi-final clash. Verbal exchanges quickly escalated into pushing and scuffles, prompting the intervention of security personnel and local police forces.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the rival supporters involved, but some reports suggest they may have been fans of Brazilian side Flamengo, who also competed in the tournament. While no serious injuries have been reported, several fans were escorted from the venue, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
A spokesperson for FIFA issued a statement shortly after the confrontation, emphasizing that fan behavior would be closely monitored moving forward:
“FIFA condemns all forms of violence and misconduct in and around its events. We are working with local authorities and stadium officials to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to maintain safety and order throughout the tournament.”
Chelsea FC also responded, urging its supporters to remain respectful and uphold the club’s values while representing the team abroad.
“We encourage all Chelsea fans to support the team with passion but also with responsibility. There is no place for violence or aggression in football,” the club said in an official message.
Many fans attending the tournament expressed disappointment over the clashes, calling for a more unified and celebratory spirit.
“This tournament is supposed to bring together fans from all over the world. It’s sad to see fights instead of football,” one attendee remarked.
Despite the incident, the game went ahead as planned under heightened security, with Chelsea delivering a dominant performance to book a place in the final.
Authorities have assured fans that increased security measures will be in place for the remaining fixtures to prevent any further disruptions and ensure a safe environment for all spectators.
