About South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST)
The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) is a professional body that represents food scientists, technologists, and other professionals serving South Africa’s food and allied industries. The SAAFoST Foundation invites students to apply for its bursary programmes for the 2026 academic year. Bursaries are awarded to students studying within the Food Science and Technology field.
There are three types of SAAFoST bursaries:
1. SAAFoST Matriculant Bursary
For learners currently in Matric who intend to study full-time towards their first undergraduate Degree or Diploma in Food Science and Technology.
2. SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary
For students who are already pursuing full-time studies towards their first undergraduate Degree or Diploma in Food Science and Technology.
3. SAAFoST Part-Time Bursary for Members
For fully paid-up SAAFoST members who are studying part-time towards a BSc Honours or BTech qualification in Food Science and Technology.

Selection Criteria & Coverage Value
The SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary is awarded based on three key criteria:

Bursary Coverage
The bursary covers tuition fees only, as per the student’s tertiary institution statement of account, up to a maximum value of:
- R40,000 per year
The bursary is awarded annually until the student graduates, provided they meet academic requirements. Payments are made directly to the tertiary institution in two instalments:
- First instalment at the beginning of the academic year
- Second instalment after satisfactory first semester results
Eligibility Requirements for the SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary Application 2026/2027
Applicants must meet all of the following minimum requirements:
- Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident
- Must have lived in South Africa for at least 3 years before applying
- Must have completed Matric
- Must be studying full-time towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma in Food Science and Technology
- Must be entering 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study in 2026
- Must be registered at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
- Must have been an SAAFoST member for at least 12 months prior to applying
- Must be able to complete studies within the prescribed timeframe:
- 3 years for Bachelor’s Degree
- 4 years for Higher Diploma
- 4 years for Undergraduate Degree studies (up to BSc Hons)
- Preference is given to students with strong academic results or high potential
Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in disqualification.

Important Notes About the SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary
- The bursary is administered by the SAAFoST Foundation in collaboration with Student Liaison Representatives at institutions.
- The Foundation reserves the right not to award any bursaries.
- Bursary recipients must submit:

- Exam results
- Proof of participation in SAAFoST activities
- The bursary may be converted into a repayable loan if:
- A semester or year is failed
- Studies are terminated or interrupted
- A course is changed
- Studies are not completed
