About Assmang Manganese (Black Rock Mine)
Black Rock Mine Operations (BRMO) is one of South Africa’s largest manganese mining operations, owned by Assmang (Associated Manganese Mines of South Africa Ltd) since 1940. Located near Kuruman in the Northern Cape, the mine holds over 70 million tonnes of manganese ore, with a metal grade of 39% manganese.
Most of the manganese produced at the mine is exported internationally, while a smaller portion supplies the local South African market.
About the Assmang BRMO Bursary Programme 2026/2027 – Fields Covered
Assmang Black Rock Mine Operations, in partnership with the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality, is offering 4 bursaries for the 2026 academic year.
These bursaries are open to students who reside within the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality in the Northern Cape. Preference will be given to students studying in the following fields:
Commerce & Social Sciences:
- BCom: Accounting, Economics, Law, Human Resources, Business Management
- BA: Public Administration, Journalism, Communications, Industrial & Organisational Psychology
- Bachelor of Social Science / Social Work
- LLB (Law)
- Bachelor of Education
Science, Engineering & Health:

Eligibility Requirements for Assmang Manganese Bursary Application in 2026/2027
To qualify for this bursary, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen
- Reside within the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality in the Northern Cape
- Be between 18 and 35 years old
- Have completed Matric
- Be studying full-time in one of the listed fields
- Be in your 1st, 2nd, or final year of study
- Be studying or accepted at a recognised University or University of Technology in South Africa
- For science-related studies: Achieved minimum level 5 in Mathematics and Physical Science in Matric
- For other fields: Achieved minimum 60% average in Matric
- Meet the minimum admission requirements for your chosen course
- Be financially in need and meet the bursary’s means test
- Not receiving any other bursary or student loan
- Preference will be given to historically disadvantaged students
