About Gallagher Foundation

The Gallagher Foundation was founded in 2001 by Ellen and Jerry Gallagher with the mission to empower young leaders in developing countries through education. The first scholarships were awarded in 2002 in South Africa, followed by Mexico in 2004 and Turkey in 2005.

The foundation believes that well-educated, ethical leaders can make a lasting impact by bringing peace and prosperity to their countries.

About The Gallagher Foundation Scholarship Programme 2026/2027
Fields Covered

The Gallagher Foundation is inviting applications for its 2026 scholarship programme.

Scholarships are available for undergraduate studies at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in any field of study, including the 4-year degree programmes or the 6-year medical degree programme.

(Students in Mexico and Turkey may also apply to study at the designated partner universities in those countries.)

Eligibility Requirements for Gallagher Foundation Scholarship Application 2026/2027

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must have completed Matric in 2024, or be currently in Matric
  • Must have a strong academic record
  • Must plan to study at UCT in 2026 (final award depends on admission)
  • Must be entering first-year undergraduate studies in 2026
  • Must apply for or be admitted into a 4-year degree (or 6-year medical) programme
  • Must come from a financially disadvantaged background with proof of need (household income not exceeding R600 000 per year)
  • Must demonstrate ethical values, such as:
    • Belief in progress without violence
    • Commitment to making a difference in South Africa
    • Traits aligned with the Gallagher Foundation’s vision of distinguished leaders
  • Must show leadership potential, proven through extracurriculars, service work, awards, or special projects

How To Apply for Gallagher Foundation Scholarship 2026/2027

Applicants must include the following documents with their application:

  • Full academic record (with latest available results)
  • Recommendation letter (from a teacher, mentor, guidance counsellor, coach, or employer – not a family member)
  • Parents/guardians proof of income (latest payslips, employer letter, affidavit if unemployed, or pension documents)
  • Four short essays:
    1. All leaders fail sometimes. Describe a failure of yours and what you learned.
    2. What do you want South Africa to look like in the next 50 years, and how will you contribute?
    3. Describe someone you consider a leader and what makes them stand out.
    4. What are your biggest personal challenges, and how are you working to overcome them?
