About the HWSETA Undergraduate Bursary 2026/2027

Eligibility Requirements for HWSETA Bursary Application 2026/2027

Applicants must meet all of the following minimum requirements to be considered:

  • Must be a South African citizen and resident
  • Must have a valid South African ID card or ID book
  • Must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
  • Must be studying or intending to study towards one of the listed undergraduate degrees in 2023
  • Must be studying or planning to study at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
  • Must be taking Mathematics and Science in Matric (if currently in Matric)
  • Must have achieved Matric exemption with Mathematics and Science (if Matric is completed)
  • Must have obtained a minimum overall average of 75% in the previous year of study
  • Must meet the institutional and HWSETA entry requirements
  • Must not be a staff member of HWSETA, its agencies, or promotional partners
  • Must not be receiving any other bursary funding
  • Must read and agree to the HWSETA Bursary Terms and Conditions

Failure to meet any of the above criteria will result in disqualification.

How to Apply for HWSETA Bursary 2026/2027

Step 1: Online Application

Apply online via the HWSETA Bursary Competition 2023 platform. This step pre-qualifies applicants and confirms eligibility.

Create a 30 to 60-second video explaining why you deserve to win the HWSETA bursary.

Important Application Notes

  • Only one application per candidate is allowed
Selection Process
  • HWSETA will shortlist 5 to 10 finalists
  • From these, 2 preliminary finalists will proceed to the vetting stage
  • Shortlisted candidates will be contacted via email and telephone
Required Supporting Documents

Shortlisted candidates must submit the following within 2 weeks:

  • Certified copy of South African ID
  • Certified copy of Matric certificate or latest results
  • Full academic record (if currently studying, on institution letterhead)
  • Proof of university application or registration (on institution letterhead)

Candidates who pass verification will be invited for an interview.

After a successful interview, bursary recipients must sign a Bursary Contract before being officially awarded.

Winners will be announced on HWSETA’s social media platforms, with press releases sent to major media houses.
