About Magalies Water
Magalies Water is a regional water utility and State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) responsible for supplying bulk water and sanitation services to municipalities, mines, industrial customers, and other businesses across Gauteng, Limpopo, and the North West Province. The organisation operates under the oversight of the South African government through the Minister of the Department of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation (DHSWS).
Established in 1969, Magalies Water was originally created to supply water to platinum mining operations in the Rustenburg and Thabazimbi regions. Over the decades, it has grown into a vital contributor to South Africa’s water security and infrastructure development.
Today, Magalies Water provides potable bulk water sourced from major river systems fed by dams owned by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). This raw water is treated at the organisation’s four water treatment plants, ensuring it is safe for human consumption. The utility manages two major catchment areas: the Crocodile River and the Pienaars River, which play a critical role in harvesting rainfall for water supply.
