About South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE)

The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE), established in 1909, is a professional non-profit association that represents electrical and electronic engineers, technologists, and technicians across Southern Africa. The organisation is divided into four sections that focus on different areas of electrical engineering: Electronics And Software, Power, Rotating Machines, and Historical.

With over a century of history, SAIEE now has around 6,000 members who are actively involved in various engineering fields, including manufacturing, electronics, research, mining, telecommunications, power infrastructure, and control systems.

About The Bursary Programme 2026/2027
Fields Covered

SAIEE offers bursaries to students pursuing undergraduate diplomas or degrees in the following fields:

Coverage Value And Selection

The bursary can be used to cover tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, accommodation, or living expenses.

  • Bursaries are awarded for one academic year at a time. Students must reapply annually, and continued funding depends on available funds and academic performance.
  • There are no work-back obligations or service contracts, but recipients are expected to act as ambassadors for SAIEE.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be required to attend an interview, either at the SAIEE offices in Johannesburg or online.
Eligibility Requirements for SAIEE Bursary Application 2026/2027

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must have completed Matric or be currently in Matric.
  • Must have been accepted to study one of the approved fields at a South African university or university of technology.
  • Matric applicants: at least 70% for Mathematics and Physical Science, and 65% for English.
  • Current university students: at least 60% average for all modules.
  • Preference is given to female students with strong academic results and financial need.
  • If receiving another bursary, the total combined funding may not exceed R150,000 per year.
How to Apply for SAIEE Bursary 2026/2027
  1. Download And Complete The SAIEE Bursary Application Form (.pdf).
  2. Prepare And Submit The Following Supporting Documents (all certified where applicable):
    • ID document
    • Latest Matric results (if still in Matric)
    • Matric certificate (to be submitted by 28 February)
    • Proof of university or university of technology acceptance
    • Academic record (if already studying) – to be submitted by 28 February
    • Parents’ or guardians’ proof of income (latest payslips or affidavit if unemployed)
    • Declaration of any other bursary funding received
