About Spes Bona Initiative for Medical Education
The Spes Bona Initiative for Medical Education was founded in 2020 by doctors from South Africa and Belgium. The initiative was established through two non-profit organisations with a shared mission: to improve the challenging living and training conditions faced by medical students in low- and middle-income countries.
Recognising the financial and emotional pressures that medical students endure, Spes Bona created the Vesalius Scholarship, which was first awarded to seven medical students in January 2021. Since its launch, the programme has continued to support aspiring doctors who demonstrate both academic potential and a strong sense of social responsibility.
