The GEM Elite Doctoral Scholarship is open for applications for the 2026 academic year. The scholarship supports students pursuing PhD studies within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at Stellenbosch University.

Scholarship Value, Duration and Selection Process
The GEM Elite Doctoral Scholarship is valued at:
- R200 000 per year
- Awarded for three consecutive years
- Total value: Up to R600 000
Selection and Awarding
- Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by 18 October 2026
- If no feedback is received by this date, the application should be regarded as unsuccessful
- Final awards are made at the discretion of the Graduate School Governing Board
- Awards are subject to:
- Availability of funding
- Appointment of a suitable academic supervisor
Eligibility Requirements for Stellenbosch University GEM Scholarship Application for 2026/2027
Applicants must meet all of the following minimum requirements:
- Must be a South African citizen or foreign national
(Preference is given to previously disadvantaged South African citizens) - Must meet the minimum admission requirements for a PhD at Stellenbosch University
- Must have completed a relevant Master’s degree
- Must intend to pursue a full-time, three-year doctoral qualification
- Must be able to commence studies on 20 January 2026
- Must have achieved a minimum average of 70% in the Master’s programme
Failure to meet any of the above criteria will result in disqualification.

- Certified copy of South African ID (SA citizens)
- Certified copy of passport photo page (international applicants)
- Certified copies of all academic certificates and official transcripts
- Motivational letter (maximum 1 page, completed on the application form)
- Proof of English language proficiency (not older than 24 months)
- Research concept note outlining the intended doctoral research topic
- Three academic reference letters, emailed directly by referees
