The GEM Elite Doctoral Scholarship is valued at:

Awarded for three consecutive years

Selection and Awarding

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by 18 October 2026
If no feedback is received by this date, the application should be regarded as unsuccessful
Final awards are made at the discretion of the Graduate School Governing Board
Awards are subject to:
- Availability of funding
- Appointment of a suitable academic supervisor

Eligibility Requirements for Stellenbosch University GEM Scholarship Application for 2026/2027

Applicants must meet all of the following minimum requirements:

Must be a South African citizen or foreign national
(Preference is given to previously disadvantaged South African citizens)
Must meet the minimum admission requirements for a PhD at Stellenbosch University
Must have completed a relevant Master’s degree
Must intend to pursue a full-time, three-year doctoral qualification
Must be able to commence studies on 20 January 2026
Must have achieved a minimum average of 70% in the Master’s programme

Failure to meet any of the above criteria will result in disqualification.
