This scholarship is awarded for full-time PhD studies at Stellenbosch University and supports research projects in the Historical Humanities.

The scholarship funds PhD research in the following Historical Humanities disciplines:

- Art History
- Historical Islamic Studies
- History
- History of Law
- History of Science
- Prehistory and Early History
In addition, interdisciplinary research topics may also be considered, particularly those that:

- Address contemporary and future-oriented issues such as forced migration, democracy, governance, and social transformation
Note: Scholarships are not awarded for Honours studies or coursework Master’s programmes where the thesis component is less than 180 credits.
Scholarship Coverage and Value
The Lisa Maskell Scholarship is generously funded and offers:
- Up to R450,000 over a period of three years
- Additional research support funding of up to R62,000

- Must be 35 years old or younger
- Must have completed a full MA research thesis
- Must intend to study full-time towards a PhD
- Must be able to start studies in February 2025

- Must contact the relevant department in advance and obtain a letter confirming supervisory capacity
- Must have an excellent academic record
- Must have achieved at least 70% in the final year of the most recent degree
- Preference is given to applicants from PANGeA partner institutions
