Who Can Apply to UCT for 2027?

UCT welcomes applications from the following categories of prospective students:

• South African citizens and permanent residents completing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or holding the Senior Certificate (SC)
• SADC and international applicants holding non-South African school-leaving certificates (such as A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate, or equivalent qualifications)

Applying with Grade 11 Results

You do not need to wait for your final matric results before applying. UCT accepts provisional applications based on Grade 11 final results and issues conditional offers. These offers are confirmed once your final NSC results are released in January 2027. Applying early with Grade 11 results is strongly recommended, especially for competitive programmes.

Minimum Eligibility for Degree Study (NSC holders)

To be eligible for admission to a degree programme at UCT, South African NSC applicants must:

• Obtain the NSC with a Bachelor’s degree endorsement
• Achieve a rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50–59%) or better in at least four 20-credit NSC subjects

How UCT Calculates Your Admission Points Score (APS)

UCT’s APS is calculated by summing your best six subjects, excluding Life Orientation, including English and any subjects required by your chosen programme. The score equals the percentage achieved, for example, 75% in Mathematics contributes 75 points toward your total.

Beyond the basic APS, UCT uses three scoring systems to rank applicants:

• Faculty Points Score (FPS): The primary ranking metric. In Commerce, Engineering, Humanities, and Law, the FPS is the APS. In Health Sciences and Medicine, it combines the APS and NBT score.
• Medical Points Score (MPS): Used specifically for the MBChB programme in Health Sciences.

The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are standardised tests used by UCT and other South African universities to assess whether applicants have the academic literacy, quantitative literacy, and mathematical competencies required for higher-education study. They are mandatory for all first-time South African undergraduate applicants to UCT.

The Three NBT Components

UCT Student Housing Applications for 2027
