About Koffiefontein Diamond Mine

Koffiefontein Diamond Mine is a historic and highly respected diamond mining operation situated in the town of Koffiefontein in the Free State province of South Africa. The mine is owned and operated by Petra Diamonds, a leading global diamond mining group known for producing some of the world’s most valuable diamonds.

Mining activities at Koffiefontein date back more than 140 years, making it one of South Africa’s oldest diamond mines. One of its most notable achievements occurred in 1994, when a 232-carat diamond was discovered — the largest rough diamond ever produced at the mine. Today, Koffiefontein remains one of the top diamond mines globally, ranked by average value per carat. During the 2026 financial year, the mine produced over 59,000 carats, reinforcing its importance in the international diamond industry.
