About DENOSA

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) is the largest nurses’ trade union in South Africa, representing more than 84 000 members. Established in 1996, DENOSA is a voluntary professional body dedicated to supporting South African nursing and midwifery professionals.

About the DENOSA Bursary Programme 2026/2027
Fields Covered

The DENOSA Study Fund Committee invites applications for the 2026 academic year.

Bursaries are awarded to fully paid-up DENOSA members studying nursing-related qualifications, including:

  • Bridging courses and short courses
  • Community Nursing Science
  • Community Health Nursing
  • Psychiatric Nursing
  • Geriatric Nursing
  • Postgraduate studies (University or Technikon)
  • Clinical Master’s Degree programmes

This bursary is specifically aimed at supporting post-basic and advanced nursing qualifications to strengthen the healthcare workforce in South Africa.

Expenses Covered & Funding Conditions

The DENOSA bursary covers a portion of tertiary study expenses only. Applicants must ensure they have alternative funding to cover any shortfall.

Important Funding Conditions

  • Funding is awarded for one academic year at a time
  • Recipients must reapply annually
  • Continued funding depends on academic performance

Eligibility Requirements for DENOSA Bursary Application for 2026/2027

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

Membership Requirements

  • Must be a fully paid-up DENOSA member for at least 2 years
  • Must remain a fully paid-up member for the duration of studies

Professional Requirements

  • Must be a registered nurse and/or midwife
  • Must have completed approved post-basic work

Academic Requirements

  • Must be accepted and registered at a recognised tertiary institution for 2026

Additional academic conditions apply depending on your course type:

Post-basic Undergraduate Courses

  • Must be studying towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Must have passed at least half of the programme (minimum 6 courses)

Post-basic Diploma Courses

  • Must have passed at least half of the course, if the diploma is longer than one year
  • (Not applicable to diploma courses shorter than one year)

Short Courses

  • Course must be listed with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
  • If not SANC-listed, you must provide motivation explaining how the course improves your nursing practice

Bridging Courses

  • Must have completed the first year of study

Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in disqualification.
