The DSI and CSIR invite students to apply for the DSI-CSIR Inter-Bursary Support (IBS) Programme for the 2026 academic year.

This bursary supports postgraduate studies (Honours/ 4th year Engineering/ Postgraduate Diploma/ Masters/ Doctoral) in the following priority areas:

Bursary Coverage Value

Funding depends on your level of study:

  • Honours / 4th Year Engineering / Postgraduate Diploma: up to R130 000 per year
  • Masters: up to R140 000 per year
  • Doctoral: up to R160 000 per year

In addition, recipients will receive a once-off laptop allowance of R10 000.

Selection Process

Eligibility Requirements for DSI-CSIR Bursary Application 2026/2027

To apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen or permanent resident
  • Be studying (or planning to study) full-time towards a postgraduate qualification in one of the fields listed above in 2026
  • Be enrolled or accepted at a public university in South Africa
  • Not receive any other bursary funding

Age and academic requirements:

  • Honours applicants: under 28 years old, minimum 65% average in final undergraduate year
  • Masters applicants: under 30 years old, minimum 65% average in Honours or 4th year degree
  • Doctoral applicants: under 32 years old, minimum 65% average at Masters level

Other requirements:

  • Masters and Doctoral applicants must have supervisor endorsement and motivation
  • Preference will be given to students with disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds
