The City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality was officially formed in 2000, replacing the Khayalami Metropolitan Council, the Eastern Gauteng Services Council, and several former local administrations, including Boksburg, Germiston, Kempton Park, Alberton, Edenvale, Nigel, Benoni, Springs, and Brakpan. It forms part of the East Rand’s local government.

The name Ekurhuleni comes from the XiTsonga word meaning “place of peace.” It is one of Gauteng’s five districts and one of South Africa’s eight metropolitan municipalities. Germiston serves as its administrative seat, and isiZulu is the most widely spoken native language in the area.
