About The FMR Bursary Competition – Process & Rules
The bursary awards are run as a music competition, which takes place in two stages:
Preliminary Round (Audition Video)
- Submit an unlisted YouTube audition video (up to 15 minutes).
- Video must start with your name and list of works performed.
- Include at least two contrasting pieces in your programme.
- Classical Vocalists: must include one opera aria and one art song.
- African Music: must perform on two instruments, one may be voice.
- Up to 3 finalists per category will be selected.
Final Round (Live Performance)
- Finalists will perform at the Baxter Concert Hall, Rondebosch:
- Classical: 29 July 2026 at 18:30
- Jazz & African: 1 August 2026 at 18:30
- Performances will be broadcast on FMR and recorded for non-commercial use.
- Finalists must confirm accompanists/ensemble details by 19 July 2026.
- Judging is based on presentation, repertoire balance, and musicality. Jazz and African entries will also be assessed on arrangement and leadership within ensembles.
- The adjudicators’ decisions are final.

- Be a South African citizen residing in South Africa.
- Be studying towards a Diploma or Degree in Music.
- Be registered at a recognised South African tertiary institution.
