About Gert-Johan Coetzee

Gert-Johan Coetzee is one of South Africa’s most celebrated fashion designers, known for his red-carpet gowns and wedding dresses. He has dressed both local and international celebrities, including Kourtney Kardashian, Kristen Cavallari, Bonang Matheba, Basetsana Khumalo, Liezel van der Westhuizen, Sashi Naidoo, and many more.

Since 2009, Coetzee has partnered with the North West School of Design (NWSD) to award bursaries to talented students. His goal is to support young designers financially and help grow the South African fashion industry.

About the Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursary Programme 2026/2027
Fields Covered

Applications are now open for the 2026 Gert-Johan Coetzee Fashion Bursary.

  • The bursary covers a 3-year Fashion Design course at the North West School of Design in Klerksdorp, North West Province.
  • Classes begin in February 2026.
  • NWSD is an internationally accredited fashion school that has been training top designers for over 25 years.
What the Bursary Covers

The bursary includes:

  • Full tuition fees for 3 years (valued at R195 120)
  • A laptop (sponsored by Gert-Johan Coetzee)
  • A Bernina sewing machine (valued at R14 000)

The bursary does not cover: stationery, personal laptop, accommodation, or meals (these costs will be for the student’s own account).

Additional obligations:

  • Recipients must complete 2 internships per year at the Gert-Johan Coetzee studios during holidays.
  • Finalists will be announced on 5 September 2025, and Gert-Johan Coetzee will choose 1 winner.
Eligibility Requirements for Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursary Application 2026/2027

To apply, you must:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be 18 years or older
  • Be in Matric or have already completed Matric with a Diploma exemption (or equivalent)
  • Plan to study full-time towards the 3-year Fashion Design course at NWSD (Klerksdorp)
  • Be able to start studies in February 2026
  • Be willing to commit to 3 years of study
  • Be fluent in English (read, write, speak)
