About Gibela

Gibela is a South African–French joint venture railway rolling stock manufacturer, formed through a partnership between Ubumbano Rail, Alstom, and New Africa Rail. It is a fully black-empowered company, with shareholding split as follows:

Bursary Coverage
  • TVET Students: Full tuition fees + book allowance
  • University / University of Technology Students: Full tuition fees + book allowance + accommodation + meals

Note: The bursary is awarded for one year at a time and can be renewed if you maintain good academic performance.

Eligibility Requirements for Gibela Bursary Application 2026/2027
For TVET Students:
  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must have completed Matric with at least Level 4 in Mathematics, Science, and English
  • Must be studying or accepted to study in one of the listed TVET fields in 2026
  • Must be registered or accepted at a recognised and accredited South African TVET College
  • Strong academic record and financial need required
  • Current N3 and N4 students are encouraged to apply
For University / University of Technology Students:
  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must have completed Matric with at least:
    • Level 6 in Mathematics, Physical Science, and Accounting
    • Level 5 in English
  • Must be studying or accepted to study in one of the listed University fields in 2026
  • Must be registered or accepted at a recognised and accredited South African University or University of Technology
  • Strong academic record and financial need required
  • Current 1st and 2nd year students are encouraged to apply
