SASMT represents music teachers across schools, private practices, music centres, colleges, and universities, continuing its strong tradition of supporting music education.
About The SASMT Bursary Programmes 2026/2027
For the 2026 academic year, SASMT is offering five bursary opportunities to paid-up SASMT members and students of members:
- SASMT Study Bursary: for general music studies.
- David Reunert Bursary: for students planning to pursue a professional career in music (as teachers or performers).
- Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship: for studies in stringed instruments, with a special focus on the violin.
- Gladwell Scholarship: for instrumental, vocal, or composition studies.
- Kathleen Irish Scholarship: specifically for piano studies.
Note: Winners of these bursaries will be required to perform at the next SASMT Annual General Meeting.
Eligibility Criteria for SASMT Bursaries Application 2026/2027
Who Can Apply?
1. SASMT Study Bursary
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be a paid-up SASMT member for at least 2 years
- Must be studying (or planning to study) towards a recognised Music qualification
- Must be accepted at an accredited South African tertiary institution
2. David Reunert Bursary
- Must be studying Music with the intention to take it up professionally
- Must be a student of a current, paid-up SASMT member
- Must reside in South Africa
- Must be 18–25 years old
- Must have completed Matric with a National Senior Certificate (or equivalent)
3. Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be a student of a current, paid-up SASMT member
- Must be studying stringed instruments (with a focus on violin)
- Can be studying either locally or internationally
4. Gladwell Scholarship
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be under 25 years old
- Must be a student of a current, paid-up SASMT member
- Must be studying instrumental, vocal, or composition music (locally or internationally)
- Institution or teacher must be approved by the SASMT Council
- Must be at least Grade 8 standard in any recognised music examining body (or higher)
5. Kathleen Irish Scholarship
- Must be a student of a current, paid-up SASMT member
- Must be in financial need
- Must be a promising piano student aiming to study at tertiary level
- Must be studying locally or internationally with an SASMT-approved teacher or institution

- Recent photo (500px height, not older than 3 months)
- Full academic record
- Proof of acceptance at a tertiary institution
- Recommendation letter from a SASMT member
- Short CV
- Motivational letter explaining why you need financial support
For the other bursaries (David Reunert, Ellie Marx, Gladwell, Kathleen Irish):
- Certified copy of ID document (not older than 3 months)
- Recent photo (500px height, not older than 3 months)
- Full academic record
- Recommendation letter from teacher or mentor
- Short CV
- YouTube link to a recent unedited video (15–20 mins, 3 contrasting works from at least 2 style periods, with candidate’s name & instrument clearly stated)
- Teacher’s declaration confirming the recording is authentic
