About IMESA

Founded in 1961, the Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa (IMESA) represents over 1,000 members, including municipal engineers and companies in the built environment sector. IMESA’s mission is to promote excellence in engineering, advancing professional standards while supporting sustainable community and municipal development.

To help achieve this mission, IMESA launched its Bursary Scheme in 2000, providing financial assistance to students who may not otherwise afford tertiary education in Civil Engineering. The programme also recognises the academic achievements of IMESA members’ dependents.

Fields of Study

For the 2026 academic year, IMESA is offering bursaries in the following categories:

1. Bursary Scheme A – Non-Members:

  • Open to students pursuing a Civil Engineering qualification or a related infrastructure engineering discipline approved by IMESA’s Executive Council.

2. Bursary Scheme B – Dependents of IMESA Members:

  • Reserved for children of IMESA members, allowing them to study Civil Engineering or related infrastructure engineering disciplines.

This bursary programme aims to cultivate the next generation of skilled engineers who can contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s municipalities and infrastructure development projects.

IMESA Bursary Benefits – Coverage and Terms

The IMESA bursary covers tuition fees and books, up to a maximum of R50,000 per academic year. Successful recipients will also receive a mentor from IMESA and are encouraged to participate in IMESA activities, gaining exposure to the professional engineering community.

Payment Terms:

  • Funds are paid directly to the tertiary institution within 60 days of submission of the student account statement or as agreed with IMESA.
  • Before the first payment, students must provide proof of enrolment and a medical certificate.
  • All successful candidates will be notified by end of 2026 following a full evaluation process.
Eligibility Criteria for IMESA Bursary Application 2026/2027

Bursary Scheme A (Non-Members):

  • Must be studying full-time toward a Civil Engineering or related qualification.
  • Must have completed first-year studies and be entering the second year or higher in 2026.
  • Must be enrolled at an ECSA-accredited tertiary institution in South Africa.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.

Bursary Scheme B (Dependents of IMESA Members):

  • Must be a child or dependent of an IMESA member with at least 5 years of membership.
  • Must meet the same academic and institutional requirements as Scheme A.
