Mhlathuze Water (MW), established in 1980, is a state-owned entity reporting to the Department of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation. The organisation plays a vital role in providing bulk water services such as raw (untreated) water, clarified (partially treated) water, purified water, as well as industrial and domestic wastewater disposal and scientific services. All of these services are delivered in a sustainable and affordable manner.

The company sources water mainly from three key supplies: Mhlathuze River, Lake Mzingazi, and Lake Nsezi. Headquartered in Richards Bay, MW operates primarily in KwaZulu-Natal, serving municipalities such as Umkhanyakude District, King Cetshwayo District, and Zululand District. The bursary is offered in partnership with the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA). Mhlathuze Water will administer the programme while EWSETA provides funding. A total of 20 bursaries will be awarded.

Eligibility Requirements for Mhlathuze Water Bursary 2026/2027

To qualify, applicants must meet these criteria:

  • Must be a South African citizen under the age of 25
  • Must have completed Matric or equivalent
  • Must be studying (or intend to study) full-time in one of the listed fields
  • Must be registered or provisionally accepted at a recognised University or TVET College in South Africa
  • Preference will be given to:
    • Students from previously disadvantaged groups (youth, black students, women, and persons with disabilities)
    • Students residing in KwaZulu-Natal supply areas (Umkhanyakude, King Cetshwayo, and Zululand Municipalities). Students from other regions may also apply.
