About Archive and Public Culture Research Initiative
The Archive and Public Culture Research Initiative (APC) is based in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Cape Town. Established in 2009, the Initiative is funded by the National Research Foundation and operates under the South African Research Chair in Archive and Public Culture within UCT’s Faculty of Humanities.
APC was created to address critical questions relating to history, memory, identity, archives, and the public sphere in South Africa. Its work is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together scholars from across the humanities and social sciences to explore how archives and public knowledge are produced, contested, and transformed.

The NRF-funded Research Chair in Archive and Public Culture invites postgraduate and postdoctoral applicants to apply for bursary and fellowship funding to support their studies and research at UCT.

Bursary Coverage and Funding Values
The Archive and Public Culture Research Initiative bursary offers full and partial funding at the following levels:
- Master of Arts (MA)
- Full funding: up to R167 000 per year (for 2 years)
- Partial funding: up to R100 000 per year (for 2 years)
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
- Full funding: up to R175 000 per year (for 3 years)
- Partial funding: up to R90 000 per year (for 3 years)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship
- Full funding: up to R200 000 per year
- Renewable for a second year, subject to satisfactory academic performance
Eligibility Requirements for UCT Archive and Public Culture Postgraduate Bursaries 2026/2027
Applicants must meet all of the following minimum requirements:
- Must have completed an undergraduate degree
- Must be studying or intending to study towards a postgraduate qualification (Honours, Masters, PhD, or Postdoctoral)
- Must be registered or intend to register at the University of Cape Town
- Must have achieved a minimum of 65% for the previous degree
Additional Criteria for Full Funding
- Must have achieved 75% or higher in the previous degree OR
- Must have a combined family income of R350 000 or less per year
Age Limits
- MA applicants: Must be 30 years or younger
- PhD applicants: Must be 32 years or younger

Students applying for MA by coursework and minor dissertation (MA History in Public Life) are also eligible to apply.
Failure to meet any of the above requirements will result in the application being disregarded.
