About Canon Collins & Sol Plaatje Educational Project
The Canon Collins Trust has been offering scholarships since 1981, supporting students from across southern Africa. To date, more than 4 000 scholars from 14 countries have benefited from its programmes. The Trust currently funds both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in South Africa, the UK, Ireland, and Malawi.
Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was a South African journalist, writer, translator, linguist, and politician. He was also a founding member and the first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which later became the African National Congress (ANC). Many institutions have been named in his honour, including Sol Plaatje University, the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, and the Sol Plaatje Educational Trust.
About Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarship 2026/2027
Fields Covered
The Canon Collins Trust, in partnership with the Sol Plaatje Educational Project, is inviting applications for the 2026 academic year.
Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding postgraduate students (Master’s and PhD) in the following areas:
- Education Policy and Practice
- Humanities (Arts, Anthropology, History, Literature)
- Justice (Economics, Climate Justice, Law, Politics)
Priority will be given to Climate Justice studies (in science or applied science) if applicants can show clear relevance to climate justice issues.
Scholarship Value & Conditions
- Funding ranges from R20 000 to R100 000, depending on financial need.
- Master’s students may receive support for up to 2 years, and PhD students for up to 3 years.
- Renewal depends on satisfactory academic progress.
- Recipients must take part in annual conferences and events organised by Canon Collins.
Eligibility Requirements for Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarship Application 2026/2027
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a national of, or have refugee status in, South Africa, Namibia, or Zimbabwe.
- Currently live in South Africa, Namibia, or Zimbabwe.
- Have completed a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent), or be completing one in 2026.
- Intend to study towards a Master’s or PhD in one of the eligible fields in 2026.
- Study on a full-time or part-time basis (distance learning may be considered).
- Be enrolled, or planning to enrol, at a university in South Africa.
